Today’s generation of learners is exposed to different technology devices in the likes of cellphones, tablets, laptops, computers, video consoles, and more. In line with this, a survey conducted by Kaiser Foundation last 2010 showed that elementary aged children use on average 7.5 hours per day of entertainment technology at home.
With a great vision on mind of developing well-rounded individuals in the future equipped with different work and life skills, the Montessori De Sagrada Familia (MDSF) conducted a seminar among the administrators and pre-school and grade 1 teachers aligned with the Play-Based Learning Approach last June 4, 2019 in the Pre-School Conference Room.
Headed by the resource speaker Mrs. Kristine G. Pabalan, an expert in Early Childhood Education, the whole day seminar was all about integrating play in the teaching and learning process as to which play is seen as an integral part in the academic success of every students.
The highlight of the seminar was the discussion of the varying reasons behind the increasing risk of depression among children. Studies revealed that the narcissist view on self and the “I can’t” mentality is because of the declination of playtime, which should be given both in the school and home. Mrs. Pabalan stressed that the moment adults take away play from children, their optimal sensory and motor skills are stopped from developing because the supposed “playtime” for the kids is replaced by knowledge based activities that will never give them an on-hand experience from the real world.
Different techniques, strategies, and activities were given to better help the teachers understand the said approach.
The administrators and the lower grade teachers of the institution are all challenged to bring the best practices in committing themselves towards Play-Based Learning Approach with enough knowledge and lot of courage and faith.
