“Literacy is the most basic currency of the knowledge economy.”
In a resounding showcase of its commitment to the promotion of literacy among its learners, Montessori De Sagrada Familia (MDSF) clinched the prestigious Loyalty Award at the Scholastic Readers Cup 2023, signifying the fifth consecutive year in which MDSF has kept its steadfast partnership with Scholastic, a global advocate dedicated to nurturing a culture of reading in young individuals.
Under the theme ‘Inspiring Dreams, Empowering Lives,’ Scholastic is on a mission to eliminate literacy challenges faced by young readers across the country. Representing MDSF at the ceremony were the Vice Principal for Academic Affairs of the Elementary Department, Mr. Jomar Dela Cruz; Subject Area Supervisor in English for Grade School, Mr. Melchor Cruz; and Subject Area Supervisor in English for the High School Department, Ms. Rojana Evangelista, who received the accolade at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bonifacio Global City last October 11.
Hosted by Scholastic Asia, the anticipated event featured its president, Frank Wong, who emphasized the role of books in shaping young minds. Wong’s compelling message resonated with a diverse audience of administrators, principals, English supervisors, literacy advocates, curriculum developers, and educators.
Together, they were encouraged to unite in a collective effort to foster a culture of independent reading and critical thinking. Literate individuals, Wong stressed, possess the capacity to apply their knowledge to address real-world challenges, thereby contributing to the betterment of society on a global scale.
Moreover, the event’s atmosphere was enriched by a musical performance from the Mandaluyong Children’s Choir and a soulful serenade as the musical backdrop by renowned Filipino singer Mark Bautista. Furthermore, a captivating show, reminiscent of ‘The Greatest Showman,’ enthralled attendees, comprising private schools from various regions in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
To provide context, Scholastic Literacy Pro is a browser-based program, that assesses students’ reading capabilities and comprehension through Lexile scores, offering thousands of quizzes to evaluate independent reading, empowering students to select books that align with their reading level and personal preferences.
