In line with promoting Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), symposiums were organized by each Grade 12 senior high school section of Montessori De Sagrada Familia (MDSF) at the Audio Visual Room (AVR) last February 5, Monday.
The designated theme for the symposium, “Media and Information Literacy in the Age of AI and ChatGPT,” involved each section being granted 30 minutes to exhibit their respective presentations and discussions.
According to Sir Vhon Joseph Solomon, a seasoned MIL teacher, the theme was selected with Generation Z (Gen Z) in mind, intending to draw their interest and engagement for the symposium, “They are familiar with that (AI and ChatGPT), so i-educate natin sila. Our aim is to educate them on how to use it properly, para maging aware sila… This is a very good technology, but then, kailangan gamitin in moderation, otherwise it can become harmful.” he stated.
“The purpose of our theme is to promote what are the possible negative and positive effects of using AI and ChatGPT and to improve the media and information literacy of our students in MDSF,” Sir Michael Santos, also a teacher of MIL, remarked.
The sections were tasked to create their own titles and presentations, with the following being “The CHATBOT (Connectivity in the Heights of Artificial Tools Bringing Opportunities and Threats)”, “Chat is this real?”, “Bytes of Wisdom: Illuminating Media Literacy in the Age of AI”, “Reel to Real: Fostering Media and Information Literacy in the Age of AI”, “Me, Myself, and AI”, and “Game On: Leveling Up Media Literacy with AI and ChatGPT”.
The preparations and challenges faced by the Grade 12 students were not futile as the symposiums gained significant interest and attention from students in lower grade levels, with some making extra efforts to attend.
According to a Grade 7 student, one of their key takeaways was about the proper utilization of AI, stating, “AI is like a platform na free naman gamitin as long as like, alam natin kung paano.”
