Summer’s in full swing! If your house is constantly filled with digital activities such as video games, watching TikTok dance craze and creating stories for Instagram, you’re not alone. It’s easy to feel like the summer days are flying by with everyone glued to a screen, but don’t worry – this can still be an amazing time for your child to learn and grow.
According to psychologist Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, children possess different strengths and learning styles. These intelligences include:
- Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence: They have strong language skills (reading, writing, speaking). They enjoy word games, storytelling, and writing.
- Logical-Mathematical Intelligence: They excel in logical reasoning, problem-solving, and mathematical skills. They enjoy puzzles, science experiments, and number games.
- Visual-Spatial Intelligence: They demonstrate strong visual perception and spatial reasoning. They excel at drawing, building, and navigating.
- Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence: They possess physical coordination and dexterity. They enjoy sports, dance, and physical activities.
- Musical Intelligence: They have a sensitivity to rhythm, pitch, and melody. They enjoy singing, playing instruments, and listening to music.
- Interpersonal Intelligence: They have an ability to understand and interact with others. They enjoy group activities, collaborating, and making friends.
- Intrapersonal Intelligence: They have a deep understanding of oneself and their emotions. They enjoy journaling, reflecting, and setting goals.
- Naturalistic Intelligence: They are sensitive to the natural world. They enjoy spending time outdoors, gardening, and learning about nature.
Summer months provide an excellent opportunity to nurture these diverse intelligences through a variety of activities and experiences.
Consider doing activities that cater to your child’s unique interests and abilities. For example, if your child is musically inclined, encourage them to learn a new instrument or write their own songs.
If they have a passion for nature, plan outdoor adventures or enroll them in a gardening workshop. Through engaging your child’s multiple intelligences, you help them develop a well-rounded set of skills and a love for learning.
In addition to that, summer is also the perfect opportunity for your child to set and work towards his/her personal goals.Whether it’s mastering a new skill, reading a certain number of books, or helping out in the house or in the family business, guiding your child identify and pursue these goals provides a sense of purpose and achievement.
Help them break down these goals into manageable steps and celebrate your child’s progress along the way. As they work towards their objectives, they’ll build confidence and feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments.
Another great way to make the most of summer is by exploring new hobbies. The summer months offer endless possibilities for your child to discover new passions and interests.
Look for non-academic classes and workshops that align with your child’s curiosities. From sports clinics, dance workshops and painting classes, exposing your child to a variety of experiences helps them develop new skills, build confidence, and uncover hidden talents.
These experiences can also be a great way for your child to make new friends and connect with others who share their interests.
Managing Screen Time:
Yes, technology can be a valuable tool for learning and entertainment, but you also need to set clear boundaries around screen time during the summer. Establish specific times for electronic use and encourage your child to engage in screen-free activities like playing board games, exploring nature, or practicing a musical instrument. When your child does use technology, guide them towards educational apps or online learning platforms that support their interests and goals.
Do not hesitate to discuss to your child the dangers of excessive screen time and engaging in online sites and tools that are deemed to be inappropriate for their age. Help them find a healthy balance that allows them to benefit from technology without letting it dominate their summer experience.
Making the Most of Summer:
This summer, you have the opportunity to help your child grow, learn, and create unforgettable memories. The skills and experiences they gain during this time will contribute to their overall development and sense of self, creating a lasting impact long after the summer ends.
