To elevate mathematical learning experiences and make them more efficient and engaging, the Elementary Department of Montessori de Sagrada Familia (MDSF) has recently procured a set of math manipulatives from Learning Resources USA.
Notable additions to the department’s toolkit include Base Ten starter sets, recordable answer buzzers, precision-enhancing “Bullseye” demonstration compasses, magnetic number bonds, operational blocks, and fraction circles.
According to Ms. Jahna Carmella Galvez, a math teacher specializing in lower grade levels (LGS), the importance of introducing mathematical concepts through interactive learning enables students to witness the application of abstract ideas in the real world.
“They breathe life into complex ideas; simplifying comprehension and retention and creating a personalized learning journey,” she explained.
The acquisition of age-appropriate materials aligns with MDSF’s commitment to innovative learning, tailored to the developmental stage of each learner.
“Manipulatives significantly boost engagement, especially in subjects like math that rely on visualization. They tailor content, pacing, and assessments, guaranteeing a solid grasp of the material for each student,” Ms. Galvez added.
From double-sided geoboards to pizza fraction models, these materials provide hands-on experiences, allowing students to interact with seemingly abstract concepts like time, lines, and relationships between different shapes.
Having these tools prepared at the onset of the academic year ensures that math teachers can access an array of essential resources, including popsicle sticks, fake currency, rulers, easy-to-write-on-and-wipe-off demonstration clocks, and a hundred-pocket chart, aiding the mastery of patterning skills through counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
Furthermore, MDSF clarifies that minuscule educational toy pieces, such as place value disks and fraction cubes, are “food-safe” and “BPA-free,” adhering to DFA standards.
