To further harness their coaching skills, members of the Sports Department of Montessori De Sagrada Familia attended a whole-day seminar at the Baliwag Star Arena last Friday, September 1.
The coaching seminar, sponsored by One Basketball Fundamentals Academy spearheaded by its founder, Coach Jeff Patawaran, aimed to educate and enhance the skills of Inter-barangay, high school, and college coaches, making them more equipped with the different skills and techniques in dealing with the most popular sport in the Philippines.
The seminar was facilitated by several national coaches headed by Coach Nomar Isla, a veteran coach who was also a product of grassroots basketball. He was a longtime coach of Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals who won several championships in the National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA), Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) and University Games (UniGames). He also had his stint as assistant coach of the Philippine U-20 Men’s team that won the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) in 2000. He also served as an assistant coach of the Negros Slasher of the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA). Isla also assumed the role of the assistant manager of Cebuana Lhuillier of the PBA D-League. He is currently the head coach of the Brunei men’s national basketball team, a role which he formally assumed on August 2014.
“It is our duty as coaches to share all that we know about the sport. If we don’t equip ourselves with the knowledge a coach must have, then it is the players who are being deprived of developing further their potentials”, said Coach Jeff in organizing the seminar.
The coaching clinic was attended by the entire Sports Department of MDSF led by Nian Joseph L. Perion, MDSF Sports Director; Emmanuel P. Santos, Sports Coordinator; Vhon Joseph C. Solomon, Head Coach of the Sagradan Knights; Honeylene Mangulabnan and Ellen P. Del Rosario, Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Sagradan Squires, respectively, and Arden Rivera, Team Trainor.
“As a bench tactician, I’m always open to acquire new techniques that we can apply to our system. Our task is to keep ourselves upgraded with all the skills coaching has to offer. We cannot afford to be outdated with the latest trends in basketball and in coaching.”, said Coach Vhon.
The coaching seminar proved timely for the Sagradan coaches as they prepare for the BulPriSA Season which will begin on September 19.
